Free AI website builders: what is genuinely free, and where the catch sits

"Free AI website builder" returns three completely different things mixed together. Here is how to tell them apart, and where free necessarily stops.

Three different things share the word free

"Free AI website builder" is used for three products that behave nothing alike:

  • Genuinely free: generation and hosting cost nothing, and the ceiling is low — usually a static site with no payments, no accounts, no back office
  • Free credits: you get an allowance on signup, enough for two or three generations, then it is pay-as-you-go; this is the most common shape
  • Free trial: everything unlocked for 7 to 14 days, then it charges; the only questions that matter are whether you must add a card and how you cancel

The fastest test

The fastest test is whether it asks for a payment method. No card, and it is free or credit-based. Card on the first screen, and it is a subscription trial — find the cancel button before you start.

Where the money actually comes from

Servers are not free, so every free plan charges somewhere. Know where and nothing surprises you later:

  • Domains: a free subdomain is fine, connecting your own domain costs money
  • Export: preview is free, taking the code with you is a paid feature
  • Badges: their branding sits in your footer until you pay to remove it
  • Backend: static pages are free; databases, logins, orders and payments are never free
  • Limits: traffic and storage allowances, after which the site slows down or goes offline

Where free has to stop

For validating an idea, showing a client a mockup, or publishing a one-page brochure, a free plan is genuinely enough — and it is good.

Free stops the moment any of these appear: taking money, storing user data, changing prices from a back office, using your own domain, or needing to stay up and be indexed for years.

That is not stinginess. Those things need a server, a database, certificates, backups and someone watching them. Do not expect a fully free store that takes payments — that is not saving money, it is moving the risk to a future version of you.

Five questions that tell you if it is worth using

Ask all five. The answers decide whether it can go the distance:

  • Can I export the generated code? If not, the business lives on someone else's platform
  • Can I connect my own domain?
  • Can the site take payments, and through whose account?
  • What happens when the free period ends — downgrade, go offline, or charge me?
  • Is there a clear way to cancel, in two clicks?

How to save money without getting stuck

Order matters more than the tool: use the free allowance to prove the idea works, then start paying.

  • Generate a first version from one specific sentence — clickable and readable, not pretty
  • Two or three conversational edits until the direction is right; only then consider paying
  • Buy the domain yourself (a few dollars a year) instead of letting a platform hold it
  • A brochure site can stay free forever; the moment real money is involved, move to a paid plan
